Ivan Moscovich’s life is a bewildering array of puzzle fragments – innovative artist, best-selling author, world renowned inventor, awe-inspiring survivor.
This will not be a conventional biographical documentary. Mirroring the fragmented nature of his life, the puzzles he sold in millions of units worldwide, and the over- lapping, multifaceted and technicoloured ‘harmongrams’ created through a fusion of creativity, science and random chance. Puzzleman will tell the story of Ivan Moscovich’s life in a partly non-linear, almost cyclical narrative – slowly revealing this astounding story to the viewer as they piece together the fragments of his life.
It will be a deeply personal story of one man’s life, but also the decades in which he lived and the seismic events that took place, and the films construction will show this.
Further drawing on his artwork and puzzles for inspiration, Puzzleman will be a vivid, visually striking documentary; drawing on archive footage, home video and photos, dramatic re-enactments and beautifully shot, cutaway B-roll of real life locations. Ivan’s story is brutal and unflinching, but also poetic and almost magical, and the films aesthetic will reflect this – the cinematography will imbue the film with both stark, gritty realism and, at other moments, a more ethereal quality.
The documentary will also utilise talking head interviews with Ivan and his family, friends and colleagues who have known him over 10 decades, across three continents. The interviews will not all necessarily be formally shot – at first it will have a fly-on-the-wall, behind-the- scenes quality that really emphasises this humble and unassuming man.
