ANARCHY IN THE PHILIPPINES

DIY punks in the Philippines

Documentary

We enter into the world of a group of Filipino punks on a quest for freedom and individuality against the odds. Through the microcosm of this small but passionate subculture, we gradually shed light on the reality of this seemingly carefree lifestyle; the daily struggle of barely living above the poverty line, with the looming backdrop of President Duterte’s brutal ‘war on drugs’.

Anarchy in the Philippines is an intimate journey into the DIY punk movement in the Philippines, offering an alternative, youth-focused lens with which to view important issues faced in the country today.

Observational and character driven, we will focus on four members of the scene, gaining total access into their worlds and the joys and struggles they face. Through each of our protagonists we will explore individual themes and narrative arcs.

The story culminates in our characters coming together to put on a DIY gig in a backyard in Tarlac, a rural region north of Manila. Ultimately, this is a story about how creativity and youth movements continue to flourish under the harshest conditions; political oppression and poverty.
