Wednesday, 1st February, 2017, film business bible SCREEN INTERNATIONAL led with an exclusive story announcing that both SAMANTHA MORTON and BILLIE PIPER have been attached to star in the forthcoming family drama TWO FOR JOY, produced by Blonde To Black Pictures.
Written and directed by first time feature writer and director Tom Beard, whose short film RAGS we also produced in 2015, Screen reveal that “the feature, which will chart the challenging relationship between a teenage daughter, her struggling mother (Morton) and her wayward younger brother, will touch on themes of mental illness, young carers and child abuse.” They go onto to explain that the film is being cast by Des Hamilton Casting, developed with Creative England, funded through an EIS scheme arranged by White and Company and supported by Kodak, allowing the film to be shot entirely on 35mm film. The film is also being co-produced with Michael Wiggs from Size 9 Productions.
The news was also picked up by Empire, the UKs most popular film magazine, who point out “dramas about family issues often tackle complex, difficult subjects. And Two For Joy appears set to join their ranks.” They also carried a quote from Tom where he discusses some of the influences and motivations behind the project:
“Two For Joy encompasses my professional development over the last six years. In that time I have worked closely with young people who have been through the care system with The Big House – a charity working with care leavers and at risk young people using drama…This has given me a unique perspective on issues affecting them, issues that I hope to offer up an unbiased and profound representation of in this film.”
Further casting announcements are expected soon, with the film set to shoot at the beginning of the summer around London and Southern England.
